Joe Dwiner at the Boston Herald reports on the federal trial of James "Whitey" Bulger, the subject of an interesting book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill that I'm reading called Whitey: The Life of America's Most Notorious Mob Boss.
A federal judge ruled today James "Whitey" Bulger's claim he had a license to kill is "unenforceable" -- a crushing blow for the Southie mobster's defense team.
The alleged immunity deal is the 83-year-old accused serial killer's main defense. He's set to go on trial in federal court in Boston June 10 and wants to testify he had such a pact. Federal prosecutors want to block that testimony.
U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns ruled both Bulger and federal prosecutors have 14 days to make their cases in writing that an immunity deal for past crimes -- or "historical" immunity -- can be argued. But Bulger's claim of total immunity -- or "prospective" immunity -- is denied.
