As an old sailor who served on the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam War, I was interested in the piece and the photos of the USS Eisenhower offered by the Business Insider Australia.
Aircraft carriers are the heart of the U.S. Navy. The deck of a carrier is literally a few acres of American territory floating around the world, projecting massive air and seagoing military might.

I have heard arguments lately in which so-called authorities say that aircraft carrier battle groups are obsolete. A reduction of reliance upon CARGRUs would be a huge mistake. But, of course, I am partial because of serving on 3 carriers -- CORAL SEA, RANGER, and KITTY HAWK.

ReplyDeleteIn my view, aircraft carriers are certainly not obsolete.
Nothing projects power, and delivers power, like an aircraft carrier. And as you noted, carriers are the head of a battle group made up of other warships, including a submarine, and aircraft.
I recall when the USS Kitty Hawk pulled into foreign ports. A good number of the locals (and spies) came out to see the great ship and you could see they were impressed.
Today we need more, not less, aircraft carriers.
