Crime Writer Peter James Admits To Being Fascinated With Murder

Rachel Thompson at the British newspaper the Telegraph offers a piece on crime writer Peter James.

In the words of the late, great Keith Waterhouse, “Brighton has the air of a town that is perpetually helping the police with their inquiries.” Be that as it may; it seems that Sussex Police has been helping one Brightonian in particular – crime novelist Peter James – with his inquiries for the past 25 years.

“It started with a burglary,” says James, whose new novel You Are Dead has just reached number one in the UK fiction charts. Not quite the words you’d expect from a bestselling novelist, but, by his own admission, James’ career in crime fiction was propelled by the unlikeliest of turn of events.

After James’s home was broken into, a detective was called to the scene of the crime. There began a blossoming friendship, and this fortuitous connection gave James a leg up into the fascinating world of crime, and the prevention thereof.

Thirty years on, Sussex Police has got its work cut out as Brighton’s very first serial killer has a field day in James’ hometown – fictionally-speaking, of course. You Are Dead – the 11th book in the Roy Grace series – opens with a chilling scene in which a young woman is snatched from a car park while on the phone to her boyfriend.
