As the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk is currently being broken up for scrap metal, I've been thinking about my time aboard the great warship.
I served as a teenage sailor on the USS Kitty Hawk in 1970-1971 during the Vietnam War.
I left the Kitty Hawk and the Navy in December of 1971, but the carrier's service life went on.
I reviewed Richard F. Miller's a book about the Kitty Hawk's later service, A Carrier At War: On Board the USS Kitty Hawk in the Iraq War, for the Philadelphia Inquirer in 2006.
